NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system is a teaching program that is designed to help individuals gain knowledge and learn specific skills to use in the workplace or find a job. This training can be delivered through registered training organisations (RTOs).

Smart and Skilled is a part of VET system that first started in 2015. Smart and skilled program covers a variety of courses from short courses to Advanced Diploma. Follow the link for more information https://skills.education.nsw.gov.au/

Smart and Skilled program gives eligible students access to government subsidized training in different qualifications.

Eligibility Criteria:

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Smart and Skilled funding:

  • First Nations People or Australian citizen or permanent Australian resident or New Zealand citizen, or Humanitarian, partner, bridging, and refugee visa holders

and

  • aged 17 years or older (no longer in secondary education – except for registered home school students), and
  • left school, and
  • live or work in New South Wales (or a defined NSW border)

Targeted Groups are:

  • Jobseekers, including people who are currently employed who need skills training to obtain a job in a new industry/occupation
  • People with a disability and their dependents
  • Long term unemployed
  • Commonwealth welfare recipients and their dependents
  • People experiencing or having experienced domestic and family violence and their dependents
  • Refugee and Asylum seekers and their partners
  • Young people seeking to do pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship training in order to obtain an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • People seeking pre-employment support and/or extra learning support (i.e. foundation skills training).
