Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

 

Learner Characteristics / Target Group

Target groups for the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support are students who are:

  • New entry to the industry
  • With relevant experiences gained from overseas, the intensive course will arm you with a deeper education of the legalities, ethics, and procedures that take place in the industry as your previous experience may have already equipped you with the basic soft skills of the field

 

Delivery Mode

Students are offered various delivery options to complete the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support.

(Credit and/or RPL can be provided for those with existing skills and knowledge allowing such students to complete the course in a shorter timeframe)

 

4-month class delivery with an 12-month Enrolment Period

  • Blended learning mode combining classroom sessions, self-paced study, work placement.
  • Classes will be delivered two days per week for 4 months period followed with 3 weeks work placement with no breaks.
  • Students have maximum 6 months to complete their study.
  • Rolling enrolment, students can commence the course at any time.
  • Student support officer may grant students an extension of enrolment period depending on individual circumstances.

 

12-month class delivery with an 12-month Enrolment Period

  • Blended learning mode combining classroom sessions, self-paced study, work placement.
  • Classes will be delivered two days per week for 12 months period, with four school breaks (total 12 weeks).
  • Students have maximum 12 months to complete their study.
  • Rolling enrolment, students can commence the course at any time.
  • Student support officer may grant students an extension of enrolment period depending on individual circumstances.

 

3-month class delivery with an 3-month Enrolment Period

  • A very intensive delivery mode for students with medical or nursing background.
  • Classes will be delivered once a week.
  • Students is able to complete the study in 3 months.
  • Rolling enrolment, students can commence the course at any time.
  • Student support officer may grant students an extension of enrolment period depending on individual circumstances.

Entry Requirements

Students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must be physically fit as you will be required to attend to manual handling tasks.
  • Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course.

Students will be required to complete an LLN assessment.  However, where a student has already completed any Certificate III level qualifications under AQF (LLN test is required if the applicant’s qualification is not in care or community service field) or has relevant experience in personal care/community service field for more than 1 year, the assessment will be exempted.

 

Work placement requirement

Students must be eligible to obtain the following:

  • National Police check
  • Relevant immunisation requirements including Covid-19 vaccination

Language, Literacy and Numeracy

Every student must do a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) check before we enrol you on the course. When you are caring for consumers, you must be able to read things like medicine labels and follow written instructions. You must be able to write down information for your fellow workers too. If we think you need some support with the reading and writing, then we can help!

What this means for you is that you will need to undertake an assessment for literacy and numeracy and employability skills prior to enrolment – this could take between 30 minutes to an hour. Your assessor will then have an interview with you so that we can see what additional support you may need. It’s not a pass or fail, but if you find you do struggle, we may suggest that you seek some pre course support before you start. If you have any concerns, please talk to Student Support Officers.

 

Assessments

A range of teaching and learning strategies will be used to deliver the competencies. These may include:

  • practical tasks during the face-to-face component (for selected units)
  • individual self-paced learning activities and research using learner guides
  • assessment tasks for each unit
  • workplace-based activities.

All units are supported with workbooks for both learning and assessment.  Students will be required to attend both the face-to-face component and complete the workbook tasks and submit material for assessment.

There is a compulsory workplace component of 120 hours.

 

Assessment appeals

Students can make an appeal against any assessment decision by following the Complaints and Appeals Policy outlined in the Student Handbook.  Appeals will be dealt with following the Complaints and Appeals Procedure.

 

Course Credit

Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.

Intake Date

ACE uses a rolling enrolment model. Students can enrol any week when a new unit of commencement starts.
